As a Law Clerk, you will play a crucial role in the judicial process by assisting judicial officers with in-depth legal research, summarizing motions, and providing well-informed recommendations on case rulings. This dynamic position offers the opportunity to work closely with one or multiple judicial officers, depending on the assignment, allowing you to gain diverse legal experience and insights. 

This role offers a unique opportunity to enhance your legal expertise and make a significant impact on the justice system.

Law Clerks can be assigned to positions in various areas of law, including Appellate, Civil, Complex, Criminal, Family, Juvenile, Probate, and Writs and Receivers. Additionally, there are positions in the Coverage Unit, which supports all these divisions during absences or vacancies. However, please note that assignment to a preferred area is not guaranteed and is subject to the needs of the court.

As a Law Clerk you'll be at the heart of the legal process, with responsibilities that include but are not limited to: 

  • Conducting Comprehensive Legal Research: Dive into civil, criminal, family law, and probate matters, reviewing case files, drafting detailed legal memoranda, and preparing insightful summaries on findings.
  • Evaluation and Recommendations: Summarize, evaluates, and recommends rulings on pre-trial civil motions, research applicable laws and analyze cases cited by parties , and provide judicial officers with well-founded recommendations for each motion.
  • Research and Analyze: Collaborate with judicial officers, Supervising Research Attorneys and/or Managing Research Attorneys to research, analyze, and recommend policies and procedures related to specific proceedings and recurring issues.

Who Are We Looking For?

LASC is looking to connect with candidates who meet any one of the three following qualifications:

Non-Bar Member:

  • You graduated from an accredited school of law.
  • You are eligible to take the California Bar Examination.                                                                         

Bar Member:

  • You are licensed to practice law in the State of California.
  • You are an active member of the State Bar of California and in good standing.

Non-Bar Member, Pre-Graduation*:

  • You are currently enrolled and in good standing in a Juris Doctor program at an accredited school of law.
  • You are within six months of graduation.


*If selected, the Law Clerk offer is contingent upon proof of both graduation and eligibility to take the California Bar Examination.

    • Directing and Overseeing the Court's Supervising Research Attorney and Law Clerk unit
    • Ensuring Efficiency and High-Quality Services 
     

  • Supervising Research Attorney  

    • Provide administrative and technical supervision to a designated group of Research Attorneys and Law Clerks 
    • Assist in recruiting, hiring, orienting and training Research Attorneys and Law Clerks 
    • Supervise the performance of their assigned attorneys
     

  • Research Attorney  

    • Perform legal research
    • Prepares written analyses of motions and matters on calendar for assigned judicial officers
     

  • Law Clerk  

    • Conduct legal research
    • Analyze motions and other matters on calendar to expedite court calendars
    • Prepare written recommendations thereon, and perform related duties as assigned
